Application of spectral technology in flame measurement

Jiaxun LIU, Xiaoshu CAI, Zenghao ZHU, Huinan YANG

Frontiers in Energy 2014, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 138-143 doi: 10.1007/s11708-013-0283-5

Abstract: Spectral technology has become an important detection method due to its advantages such as non-intrusive measurement and on-line analysis. In this paper, two applications of spectral technology in thermal detection were proposed. First, a novel spectroscopic method based on Planck’s law for measurement of emissivity was introduced. The emissivity, obtained by comparing the radiation intensity of the blackbody which had the same temperature as the flame with the detected intensity of the flames, could be used for on-line measurements and had a relatively higher upper temperature limit. Then, a spectroscopic method for composition detection of blended fuels was proposed based on the emissivity measured. By comparing the spectra of blended fuels and single fuels, the ratio of single fuels of the blended fuel could be calculated. The measurement system proposed in this paper, which consists of a spectrometer and a computer, is very compact.

Characterizing Thermal Augmentation of Convection-Enhanced Drug Delivery with the Fiberoptic Microneedle Device Article

Engineering 2015, Volume 1, Issue 3,   Pages 344-350 doi: 10.15302/J-ENG-2015077

Abstract:

Convection-enhanced delivery (CED) is a promising technique leveraging pressure-driven flow to increase penetration of infused drugs into interstitial spaces. We have developed a fiberoptic microneedle device for inducing local sub-lethal hyperthermia to further improve CED drug distribution volumes, and this study seeks to quantitatively characterize this approach in agarose tissue phantoms. Infusions of dye were conducted in 0.6% (w/w) agarose tissue phantoms with isothermal conditions at 15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C. Infusion metrics were quantified using a custom shadowgraphy setup and image-processing algorithm. These data were used to build an empirical predictive temporal model of distribution volume as a function of phantom temperature. A second set of proof-of-concept experiments was conducted to evaluate a novel fiberoptic device capable of generating local photothermal heating during fluid infusion. The isothermal infusions showed a positive correlation between temperature and distribution volume, with the volume at 30 °C showing a 7-fold increase at 100 min over the 15 °C isothermal case. Infusions during photothermal heating (1064 nm at 500 mW) showed a similar effect with a 3.5-fold increase at 4 h over the control (0 mW). These results and analyses serve to provide insight into and characterization of heat-mediated enhancement of volumetric dispersal.

Understanding the behavior of recycled aggregate concrete by using thermogravimetric analysis

Subhasis PRADHAN, Shailendra KUMAR, Sudhirkumar V. BARAI

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 6,   Pages 1561-1572 doi: 10.1007/s11709-020-0640-5

Abstract: The physio-chemical changes in concrete mixes due to different coarse aggregate (natural coarse aggregate and recycled coarse aggregate (RCA)) and mix design methods (conventional method and Particle Packing Method (PPM)) are studied using thermogravimetric analysis of the hydrated cement paste. A method is proposed to estimate the degree of hydration ( ) from chemically bound water ( ). The PPM mix designed concrete mixes exhibit lower . Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) mixes exhibit higher and after 7 d of curing, contrary to that after 28 and 90 d. The chemically bound water at infinite time ( ) of RAC mixes are lower than the respective conventional concrete mixes. The lower , Ca(OH) bound water, free Ca(OH) content and FT-IR analysis substantiate the use of pozzolanic cement in the parent concrete of RCA. The compressive strength of concrete and cannot be correlated for concrete mixes with different aggregate type and mix design method as the present study confirms that the degree of hydration is not the only parameter which governs the macro-mechanical properties of concrete. In this regard, further study on the influence of interfacial transition zone, voids content and aggregate quality on macro-mechanical properties of concrete is needed.
